The God of War

"The nighttime quiet dulled the sounds of distant trucks and cars, and the star-pocked sky obliterated the daytime luster of golden arches and other neon enticements. Night restored the desert to its naked majesty. I could hear it laughing at the gas stations and schools, at telephone wires and electricity converters and irrigation canals--at all the human attempts to tame it."
